2017 was a record-breaking year for the advertising industry.
For the first time in history, digital ad spending surpassed all other advertising categories, including television and print, which have dominated for decades.
The digital advertising industry reached $209 Billion last year and shows no signs of cooling off. It’s doubled in size since 2013, dwarfing print media campaigns by at least two thirds in annual spending, and achieving a whopping 21% growth in just the past twelve months.
Every entrepreneur in the world knows that online advertising is the way to go, and they want to experience its profit-boosting power.
Now, if you’re in digital advertising this sounds like great news. Your industry is on fire and there’s no shortage of money to be made.
But there is a dark secret that is destroying digital advertising like a deadly virus. It’s a secret that people don’t talk about because they feel there’s nothing they can do to stop it. In fact, most marketers are afraid to accuse the “big advertising giants” of acting as accomplices to this multi-billion dollar crime for fear of what the repercussions might be.

The definition of ad fraud is: You get charged for an ad that has zero chance of making any return.

It’s the mom down the street who quit her corporate job to stay at home with the kids and work virtually with clients all over the world. It’s the coffee shop down the street, the fashion brand run from someone’s living room, the teenager who saved up his babysitting money to launch an online store. If you’re an advertiser, for every $100 you spend on a campaign only $50 is going to purchase legitimate performance and the other $50 is being eaten up by spammers, scammers, bots, dark traffic, and bunk placements.
This may be okay for a big brand marketer with huge budgets at their disposal, but if you’re a new startup, you have very little chance of making a return on your ad budget. That can often be the difference between life or death for your small business.

The ad ‘performed,’ therefore the advertiser must pay. A click is a click is a click, it’s as simple as that.
Every so often an ad network does shut down a known scammer and seize the revenue generated from fraud. But when they do, the network returns only a fraction of those stolen funds to the advertiser (if any at all), and often ends up keeping the money for themselves.
And again, the scope of this fraud is just incredible… very likely the biggest scam in history.

James Wallace (JW) has been an entrepreneur since he was 11 years old, and has built hundreds of applications in over 25 tech startups. JW built his first website in 1994, and hasn’t stopped building technology since. JW comes from 5 generations of advertising experience that serviced the Fortune 500 for over a century. The family sold its offline assets and James took the company online in 1994, trading Fortune 500 clients for Silicon Valley tech startups.
